The children in Primary 4 had a great afternoon meeting Calum from “Cool Creatures” who introduced them to a range of animals from the classification groups they have been studying. All the children were given the opportunity to handle “Brave” the meerkat, “Max” the tortoise, “Ellie” the armadillo, some millipedes and finally the giant Burmese Python. They also got the chance to see “Jeremiah” the dwarf bullfrog who kept trying to jump across the room looking for dark places to hide. As you can see from the videos everyone had a fantastic time putting their animal science skills to good use working out which animal group each of the visitors belonged to. Well done everyone, our next step will be looking at popular pets from each group with hopefully more visitors to class next term.
P4, P5 & P5/6 children are having ukulele lessons as part of the national youth music initiative. They got off to a great start last week and love playing the ukulele already.
Author Lari Don visited P4-7 to talk about her books and writing. The children were involved in developing a trapping story idea and got time to ask fantastic questions with the best being from Caleb in P7
“If you were stuck on a desert island with only enough equipment to write one book what would you write?”
The children were then given the opportunity to purchase one of her books which were signed with a personal message for them.
If you had happened to pass by the school on Wednesday evening you would have been in for the shock of your life. Ghosts and ghouls were in abundance as the school got together for its annual Halloween extravaganza. Great fun was had by all and we raised cash for school projects too. The John Lewis chefs were busy again on Thursday. To ward off the cold winter days the team had the pupils making their own homemade tomato soup. Add to this a simple idea for cheesy croutons and a yummy post-soup fruity snack and you have lunch sorted for your hungry children. Thanks to the team for supporting our pupils and teaching them the health and hygiene rules of the kitchen and for the practise in putting together simple but healthy recipes. Our pupils loved it!
Want the recipe?
1 white onion
1 large carrot
1 vegetable stock cube
2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes
Pinch of sugar
100g crème fraiche
Salt and Pepper to taste
Sauté chopped onion in a large pan with a little cooking oil until translucent. Stir regularly.
Add chopped/grated carrot and soften.
Add chopped tomatoes and stir for two minutes.
Stir in pinch of sugar to sweeten.
Dissolve vegetable stock cube in 450mls of boiling water.
Pour stock on to vegetables and simmer for 20 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Carefully blend soup. Add more hot water if you desire a thinner consistency.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
Ladle in to bowls.
Garnish each bowl with a swirl of crème fraiche if desired.
Thick cut white loaf
Grated cheddar cheese
Salt and pepper
Using a star shaped cake cutter (or any shape you like) carefully cut bread.
Arrange stars on a large baking tray and sprinkle cheddar cheese on top of each one.
Season with salt and pepper.
Place in grill and grill for 8-10 minutes until cheese is melted.
Fruit Kebab Grinch’s
White mini marshmallows
Peel banana and cut in to 2mm thick disks.
Assemble onto cocktail sticks in the following order:
Grape (for Grinch’s head)
Slice of Banana (white fur at bottom of Santa hat)
Raspberry (thinned end upwards. Santa’s hat)
Mini marshmallow (pompom on hat)
The upper school gathered at Meadowbank Stadium to participate in a multi-school sponsored walk to raise funds for Comic Relief. The P1s to P3 had a sponsored scoot, skate and cycle in the playground. In total we raised over £1,000. This was an unbelievable total – a big thank you for all who took part.
